In this blog post, I will show you how to allow any video in Google Drive to play on Android. It might be annoying when you are trying to watch a video in Google Drive and it won’t play, but if you use this method, it will work perfectly.
The Google Drive app for Android has been known to have a few bugs. For starters, it can’t play videos and pictures from Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc. In this post, I’m going to show you how to fix the error and play the videos on the Drive app.
I am a big fan of Google products, so I was disappointed to discover that the Android version of Drive will not play videos on an Android device. I use Drive a lot for my personal and professional use, so this was a deal breaker for me.
Streaming video files straight from Google Drive rather than keeping them locally is an excellent method to save space. However, several users report that Google Drive has lately stopped playing videos on Android. If this is the case for you as well, be sure you follow the procedures outlined below.

- Examine the network
- Verify that the video file format is one that is supported.
- Take a look at the web-based client.
- Download and re-upload the video
Google Drive videos won’t play
To begin, check the network to see whether the video file format is listed among the supported formats. If that isn’t the issue, try visiting Google Drive via a browser. You can do it on your phone’s web browser (using the Desktop Site option), but a computer is preferred.
Finally, you may download the video and re-upload it to see if there have been any changes.
1. Examine the network
Checking the network should be your first step. Before you attempt to play movies in Google Drive, make sure your phone is linked to a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
Check out the troubleshooting methods in this post if you’re having any significant problems. If the network connection, on the other hand, does not seem to be the issue, go to the following step.
2. Verify that Google Drive supports the video file type.
All of the common video file types are supported by Google Drive, although not all of them. There are a few popular extensions that are commonly used yet Google Drive does not support. Keep in mind that you’ll most likely be able to upload video files that aren’t supported. You just can’t play them on Google Drive.
Check out the list below to see which video formats Google Drive supports:
- Files in the WebM format (Vp8 video codec; Vorbis Audio codec)
- MPEG4, 3GPP, and MOV files are all supported (h264 and MPEG4 video codecs; AAC audio codec)
- AVI is an acronym for audiovisual information (MJPEG video codec; PCM audio)
- MPEGPS is an acronym for Multi-Purpose (MPEG2 video codec; MP2 audio)
- WMV
- FLV (Adobe – FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio) is a video format developed by Adobe.
- MTS
- OGG
If you know the video files you’re attempting to play are supported but Google Drive isn’t playing them, go on to the next step.
3. Experiment with the web-based client.
Rather of relying on Android, you may use your browser to access Google Drive via the web-based client. You may also install Google Drive for Desktop and utilize a device that supports a much broader range of codecs.
You may either download the movie to your PC and view it there, or use a USB connection to transfer it to your Android. It’s all up to you. And, although viewing a movie on the cloud (essentially streaming it from Google Drive) is more convenient, it may be your best choice for actually accessing the film.
4. Download and re-upload the video
Finally, you may download and re-upload the movie to your Android. We already discussed the video processing glitch (you can read about it here), thus this problem may be connected. The easiest method to fix it is to re-upload the movie and play it on Google Drive.
And with that, we may call this essay to a close. If you have any further questions or ideas, please leave them in the comments area below. We eagerly await your response.
