Vigilance In County Means No Rats Here

Grande Prairie

As efforts continue to locate and destroy any additional Norway Rats at the Medicine Hat landfill, County of Grande Prairie ag fieldman Sonja Raven says the rat problem is not a big one here, largely because residents are quick to contact them about any sightings.

Raven says the last time Norway Rats were spotted in the region were several years ago when a few were found in an RV from B-C.

She says the rats can have a very negative impact on agriculture.

"They get into grain bins and destroy crops and it's not just with what they're eating it's [the contamination] with all the fecal matter and that other stuff. They're just nasty little disease-carying rodents and we really want to keep ourselves rat free."

Raven says they have two problem wildlife specialists on staff assigned specifically to deal with rodent and other animal-related concerns.
