Asus focuses on Premium Smartphone Series, Releases ZenFone 3 in India

Asus, a Taiwanese multinational computer hardware, and electronics company, launched the ZenFone 3 series on this Wednesday. The company is focusing on a high-quality range of devices in India. The ZenFone 3 series are going to be priced at Rs. 21,999 while the earlier Zenfone variants were sold in the range of 8,999 to 19,999 Indian rupees.

Two of the variants of ZenFone 3 viz. ZenFone 3 Deluxe and ZenFone 3 Ultra both are priced at Rs. 49,999 and will be available to customers from the month September. Another variant, ZenFone 3 Laser will also be available at the same time and it will be sold for Rs. 18,999. Besides these, Asus has also showcased its upcoming laptops, Transformer 3 Pro and Zenbook 3 and these will be launched to customers from October.

Jerry Shen, the Chief Executive Officer of Asus, in his discussion with Gadgets 360, declared that the company is focusing to vie with companies like Samsung and Apple in the high-end range. He further added that the ZenFone 3 Deluxe will be their new premium device for competing for other famous brands as he said, “The ZenFone 3 Deluxe is our flagship product for the Indian market and comes with a lot of firsts.”

Moreover, he said, “Sony launched its new camera sensor in May, and the ZenFone 3 Deluxe is the first to ship with the sensor. The camera on the ZenFone 3 Deluxe is better than the ones seen on the iPhone 6s Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S7. One of the ZenFone 3 Deluxe variants also features Snapdragon 821 processor, which again makes it the first to ship with the all-new chipset from Qualcomm.”

He further said, “The biggest highlight of the ZenFone 3 Deluxe in terms of design is its invisible antennas at the back which add to the all metal build of the handset.” So according to Shen, the Deluxe variant of ZenFone 3 would be much similar to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in terms of design as it will be having antenna lines. Moreover, the CEO announced that the Snapdragon 821-powered ZenFone 3 Deluxe model will be released in India.

The company is also going to double its share according to Peter Chang, the Region Head of South Asia and Country Manager for Asus India. “So our total smartphone market share should be around 5 percent in India,” he declared. Further, he added, “We want to increase our share in the premium segment where we lack the most. With the new ZenFone 3 range, we are targeting over 10 percent market share.”

“In terms of sales channel, we will be more aggressive this year,” he added. Mr. Chang also said, “The ZenFone 3 series smartphones will be available right away from the launch day and can be grabbed from more channels than ever. Actually, this year we won’t be just going with the online sales but also an offline model at the same time. Apart from top e-commerce retailers in India, Asus will also sell the products from other retailers including the offline ones to extend the reach of our products.”

Speaking about the features of Zenfone 3 series, Mr. Shen declared “The ZenFone 3 smartphone uses 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass on both front and rear panels,” and he added “You won’t find many manufacturers using 2.5D Corning Gorilla glass on their phones but we have used it on both sides. We want to offer the best to our consumers.”

According to Shen, the Asus ZenFone 3 Ultra will have a larger screen for those who use much media on their phones. Thus he said, “We believe that the dual speakers on the ZenFone 3 Ultra can easily compare to the speakers that currently ship with some notebooks.” The Xiaomi Mi Max, featured a 6.44-inch screen while the ZenFone 3 Ultra will be having a much larger screen of 6.8-inches.

One of the bad news for some users is that the company is releasing Zenfone 3 series with USB Type-C technology so the 3.5mm audio port might be removed. According to one of the Asus products head, this will happen with the future devices and the current cards will not get it.

He declared, “Currently, most of earphone manufacturers and smartphone makers are sticking to 3.5mm audio jack. We will also stick to the standard 3.5mm audio jack for some time until we see the adoption of the new tech in more phones,” and added “This will be best for the end user because we think a lot of people use their phones everywhere no matter outdoor or indoor or any time bound. Not many of them will prefer moving around with a separate set of earphones that is designed just for one device. In 2016, we think using the 3.5mm standard is the best choice.”

Furthermore, Peter Chang declared that Asus will soon be adding more authorized customer care support centers in India. Thus he said, “We continue to expand our after-sales services. Right now we have 150 service centers and we will add more soon.” And further added, “In terms of spare parts, we earlier had just one warehouse in India but now that number has gone up to three.”
