NewsAlberta Folk Singer Brings Songs About Working Women To Grande Prairie
Telling the stories of working women at one company through over 90-years may seem like a daunting task but Alberta folk-singer Maria Dunn says creating "Piece By Piece" has been a fascinating and enriching experience. The show features original songs and video interviews with women who worked through the years at the GWG clothing factory in Edmonton. "I have written songs inspired by those experiences and so it's a live music performance--like a concert--and we weave the video in with the songs so it's kind of like a seamless presentation." The factory opened in 1911 and closed in 2004. Dunn says the women who worked there laboured to support their families and gain some independence. From Ukranian immigrants who left the family farm to newcomers from Asian countries, Dunn says the workers tell the tale of the people who came west and shaped this province too. "Piece By Piece" runs Saturday night at the Grande Prairie Live Theatre: Call 780-538-1616 for information and tickets. image courtesy www.mariadunn.com Most Viewed Stories
