NewsJuly Police Stats Show Uptick In Assaults, Collisions
Top brass at the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment say the upward trend in calls for service is one they expect to continue. The July report shows increases in "person crimes" like assault, as well as drug offenses and even collisions. Last month alone saw 232 collisions in the city a 13-percent jump from a year ago. Superintendent Ray Noble says stepped up traffic enforcement can pose some challenges when it comes to resources. "When we look at the collision rates and the number of injuries, you know, the overall community safety - it's time well-spent [on additional enforcement]. The injuries and death as a result of collisions in this area are really quite high - it's a very significant impact on our community." Noble says driver behaviour is the number one cause of crashes. There have been over 1,600 collisions in this city so far this year: Noble believes most of them were completely preventable. iStockphoto image Most Viewed Stories
