The new third fire hall in town has been busy organizing some specialized training facilities.

Once everything has been set up, firefighters will be able to learn about all sorts of rescues, including confined spaces, trench, cave-in and rope rescue.

Terry Haughian is in charge of training for the Grande Prairie Fire Department - he says the guys will be training about 20 hours a week on the equipment.

"It takes [a lot] of specialized training to do what they're going to be doing. Once the props are all up and running they'll be training on them quite a bit to get proficient so that they can, if they have to,  go out and do it for real."

They're still waiting on materials to build the cave-in rescue simulator.

Haughian says there's no set timeline for the work to be finished, but he's hoping it will be done in about a month.
