Whenever an individual or group is in need of assistance, residents of the Grande Prairie area have showed they are more than willing to lend a helping hand.

That was proven once again during last night's Rotary Food Bank Drive.

A record 154 thousand food items was collected, as volunteers covered all of Grande Prairie, Sexsmith, and Clairmont in one evening.

Organizer Ken O'Shea says they had over 600 volunteers assist them with their efforts.

"Families that would enter a family team, we had church groups, youth groups.  Of course the Rotarians all entering teams, and companies to corporations.  And you know I get feedback from all of them saying that it is such a fun event and that they really enjoy it."

O'Shea says the donations collected last night should get the Salvation Army Food Bank through much of the winter.

He adds as the city continues to grow, the need for the food bank's services also becomes more important.
