County of Grande Prairie has created a new physician recruitment and retention policy, which they hope will help attract doctors to the region.

Any physician that signs a three year commitment to set up their practice in any County community will receive $10,000.

Councillor Brock Smith is chairman of the recently formed South Peace Physician Attraction and Retention committee.

"You have to have doctors for any economic development, you know. Especially seniors - if you have seniors living in your community, they need doctors. and if they've got to go too far they won't live here."

The policy also rewards one new doctor a year that makes a three year commitment to practice in the city of Grande Prairie, by giving that doctor $5,000.
