The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team -- or ALERT -- unit in Grande Prairie is getting some added muscle.

The expansion of the unit here will see four members of the RCMP detachment tasked to the unit, but as Superintendant Ray Noble explains, it also means additional manpower coming to the city.

"We are allocating four additional municipal resources to ALERT, but that also leverages four additional provincial resources.  So for an investment of four members, we are getting eight more members in the region."

Noble says the two-man unit has had some great successes in its investigations into organized crime activities here, namely the drug trade.

He adds there will be some re-organizing of the "street level" policing done by regular members as the local Mounties now tied to the ALERT wil need to be replaced.
