One of the first steps in the city's goal of reducing idling times within city limits was taken yesterday, as the Environment Committee got a glimpse of an Idle Reduction policy for city staff and anyone operating a city-owned vehicle.
Idling will be restricted when the temperature is between -10 and plus 25.
Environmental Sustainability Department Manager Michelle Gardiner says there are some exceptions, such as Emergency vehicles, vehicles with light indicators and instances where worker safety may be compromised.
City transit buses are also exempt between October 1st and April 1st.
City council will be asked to accept the policy when they gather on Monday night.
It will be evaluated several times over the next year, with the first one coming up in the spring.
