At least one parent of every minor hockey player registered in Alberta this year will be required to take the "Respect In Sport - Parent" online program.

Here in Grande Prairie, it must be completed by October 31st, or you run the risk of having your child suspended from hockey until it is completed.

GP Minor Hockey Executive Director Lorna Leblanc says it's an effort to get respect back in the game - both on and off the ice.

"The majority of our refs are 12-13 years old.  So they would have a difficult time throwing out somebody that could be their school teacher or their friend's mom and dad.  So we really need the parents to get on board with getting respect back."

The program takes about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

Anyone who volunteers to run a team must take the four hour "Respect In Sport - Coaches" online program.

Both are available through the Hockey Alberta website.
