Pine beetle survey results show the combination of control work and weather is having a positive impact in reducing the bug populations in the Peace region.

The recent data from the province shows a drop in beetle numbers in the region from Grande Cache north east to Grande Prairie and further east to Slave Lake -- an area that's seen major beetle infestation of the past several years.

Areas in central Alberta and north of Peace River saw either no change or slight increases in beetle numbers.

The over-winter survey was done between May and June this year at 179 sites.

The province recently beefed up funding for survey and control work with an additional 40-million dollar cash infusion.
