The City has cut the cord on a by-law that requires an athletic field to be part of any that requires an athletic field to be part of any new school developed here in Grande Prairie.

The rule said that any new school in the city had to have a plan in the development package regarding a soccer of football field, a provision that could've affected the construction of the new public high school.

City Councillor Justin Munroe says the city was probably trying to save themselves from a sticky situation with that by-law.

 "The city's original intent in coming up with this bylaw was we didn't want to be in a position where we're having a facility build that is not complete. So, if the facility is to be built and most schoosl require some type ofa  playing field, we don't want to be in that type of position."

The province launched an appeal of the by-law, stating that the money is for the construction of the school building, not for things deemd 'municipal works.'

Munroe says that the City has no money put away for the project, and that this could be something that comes up in budget discussions in November.

GP Public School Board Chair Karen Prokopowich says since the condition is removed, the high school build can go ahead.

"We'll just wait for the decision to come through for all the permits for the end of the month. And once they come through at the end of the month then we'll be sure that everything can go ahead then."

Prokopowich says there haven't been any discussions about where they'll find funding for an athletic field for the high school, adding that they board will be talking about it in the August 28th meeting.
