Free fishing weekend on tap

Lakes across the province will likely see an increase in fishing this weekend, thanks to a special promotion run twice a year by Sustainable Resources.  Alberta residents can fish on any non-national park body of water this weekend without needing a licence to do so.  Local SRD spokesperson Blaine Burke says these events, which include an ice fishing component in February, have been received well.  And they've worked too.  From 2008 to 2009, there was a 4.6 percent in crease in the number of adult fishing licences issued, while youth numbers went up 2.3 percent.
