A team from Parkland Composite High School in Edson are the 2012 Alberta Envirothon champions.
The competition was held last weekend at Long Lake Environmental Centre near Athabasca, and included three parts - field tests, a written exam, and a 20 minute oral presentation.
Alberta Envirothon chairman Blaine Burke feels it is important to get the meesage of environmental stewardship to children at a young age.
"That's why we give seedlings to grade ones on Arbour day. That's why we meet with grade six's for Alberta Forestry Week. It's all part of the plan to install environmental stewardship at a young age. Hit them again at a mid age. And then a project like this for high school students is just another opportunity to gain that understanding."
The team from Grande Prairie Composite High finished in second place, two points behind Parkland.
The provincial champs are now off to the North America competition later this year in Pennsylvania.
