It was one year ago on Saturday that Alberta's distracted driving law came into effect.

Progress has been slow, with a lot of places in the province seeing police giving out MORE tickets than before the legislation was in place.

RCMP Corporal Roy Kennedy says they are aware of what's going on, and are doing their best to stop it

"We know it's still happening, but I kind of equate it to speeding in some respects; even though the police are out there running radar and trying to encourage people to slow down, people are still speeding. So it's going to be an on-going enforcement issue, one that we'll continue to address day to day and throughout the year."

Kennedy adds that the law applies to everyone that has any hand-held item in thieir hands such as a cell phone, food or a book.

Distracted driving comes with a $172 pricetag.
