The Peace Region was reponsible for over a quarter of the honey produced in our province last year.

According to the Alberta 2011 Beekeepers Survey, 9.4 million pounds of honey was produced through bee colonies in our region.

That was the second highest amount in the province, behind only the Northwest region, which includes Edmonton, Slave Lake, Whitecourt and Wetaskiwin.

Overall, Alberta beekeepers produced 34.1 million pounds of honey last year, which was 1.5 percent lower than 2010 numbers.

Other stats from the survey showed there were 798 beekeepers operating in Alberta last year, the highest number since 1992.
