Do Safety Checks When Pulling Trailer, Police Say

You have your boat or fifth wheel hitched on to the back of your vehicle and you're all set to hit the highway.

Or are you?

Corporal Roy Kennedy with the Grande Prairie RCMP says there are a number of checks you should do before you head out.

One is making sure that your light systems are working.

"You have to have working running lights, brake lights, and signal light. That's a big thing--a lot of times your trailer obstructs the towing vehicle so you can't see brake lights. So, you could be putting yourself and other people on the road in danger if these light systems aren't working."

Kennedy adds all boat trailers, travel trailers and fifth wheels must also be licenced and registered.

And you can pull up to two items behind your vehicle in Alberta, but if you are heading to B-C, the law there states that you can only pull one item.
