Members of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta were all 12 years old at one time -- and maybe it was an awesome teacher who made math and science fun, that set them on the road to the careers they have.

APEGA

recognizes those teachers with awards -- and one winner is in our own backyard.

Angela Nilsson teaches at Montrose Junior High: She says they even find a way to make the memorizing of formulas fun.

"We might play a dorky song and the kids have to sing the song. Doing different things like that they might think are kind of cheesy, but they love it secretly."

Nilsson was given her award at Thursday's general assembly -- much to her surprise.

She says children should "dream big" and having math and science skills in their toolboxes opens doors to all kinds of careers.

She credits a great team of educators and staff at Montrose in her winning the award.
