Officials with Alberta Health Services say the 48-year old man who tangled with a grizzly earlier this week near Swan Hills is in serious but stable condition in the Q-E-2 Hospital.
The Grande Prairie STARS air ambulance got the call around 10 o'clock Tuesday morning.
STARS officials say the crew landed in a clearing near a trail road and met a ground ambulance there.
The hunter had apparently startled a bear cub, and then encountered the mother grizzly.
He was able to get a shot off and scare the bear away, but was forced to walk until he could get a signal on his cellphone to call for help.
Emergency responders on ATVs found him and took him to the ambulance.
A spokesman from the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Safety office is quoted as saying a dead bear was found by search teams not far from the attack site.
