Fire fighters and vehicles from both the city and County fire departments have been sent to Mackenzie County to help battle a massive wildfire near Zama City.

A total of 5 vehicles and 11 staff from the two departments left early Friday morning.

They will be stationed in Zama City and will focus their efforts at first on keeping the fire away from the community.

County fire chief Everett Cooke says several lessons they learned from helping battle wildfires in Slave Lake last year were implemented in the planning stages this time.

"We were contacted early by the office of the fire commissioner, to put together some assets and a list for them if they need to call on them.  And for ourselves, how we can properly inventory our units, be better prepared, and take the necessary equipment and provisions with us in the event that we are on our own for a little while."

The assistance efforts are being co-ordinated through Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership.
