It's been a quarter of a century since the Black Friday tornado touched down in Edmonton.

Since then, efforts have been made to better predict violent weather.

David Phillips is a Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada - he says it's not just the equipment that's improved over the last few years.

"We have more bells and whistles.  Better radar, doppler radar, we have better satellites, better imagery software, even the science is better.  But our observing has really improved.  I always think that the most dramatic change of weather forecast  that has changed over the past couple decades is our ability to observe Mother Nature."

He adds that social media has also played a big role in how fast they can get warnings out to Canadians.
