A piece of legislation that's going into place in British Columbia in July will see scrap metal dealers asking for I-D if you want to sell any metal.

Alberta is looking at a similar law, all in an effort to cut down on the sale of stolen industrial goods.

Colby Whipple is a metal dealer at H-W Metal here in Grande Prairie - he says he thinks the law is a good idea.

"I've heard more labour-intensive ideas come forward such as trying to get all of the serial numbers written down off of everything, much like they do at pawn shops, which for us would be virtually impossible because 99 percent of the stuff we buy does not have a serial number on it."

He says that they do write down people's names, license plates and other information at the time of sale, but they do not currently take identification from customers.
