When ground was broken last summer for the new regional hospital in Grande Prairie, it was announced that the facility would be named the Shields Health and Education Center.

But almost a year later, no formal application has been made to have that name associated with the building.

And Alberta Health Services board member John Lehners says that application will likely not happen for some time.

"Once the construction phase is complete and there's an effective date for the commencement of the hospital services, Alberta Health Services prepares a formal submission to Alberta Health and Wellness and so it's that time we submit an endorsement for a common name for the site and requestthe minister's approval at that time."

The name of the regional hospital became an issue locally during the recent provincial election.

But Lehners says any possible name change would have to come from the government, adding the AHS board would not make that decision on their own.
