Some funding has been approved to help better equip Grande Prairie school divisions to be able to help their students when they have mental health issues.

Public School District Superintendent Carol Ann McDonald says they got $505,000 from Alberta Education.

"We wanted to make sure we had additional services in our schools for this coming year, and what that money allows us to do is to hire a social worker for one of our schools plus certify teacher-counsellors within our schools."

McDonald says that they'll be sharing the funding with the Catholic School Division.

She adds they'll also be working closely with mental health associations in the region to make sure students are getting the best, most seamless help they can give them.
