A recent survey shows 94 percent of Canadians think small businesses play a critical role in the growth of our economy.

The same survey also showed that 61 percent of respondents said they would pay more for a product or service in order to support a small business.

RBC small business director Mike Michell says word of mouth referrals was a factor in why many Canadians supported small businesses, and is something he thinks those companies should continue to take advantage of.

"Continue to ask your existing clients "You know, if you want to do me a favor, if you are happy with the product or service that you got, can you talk to a few of your friends or your neighbors about the product or services I offer."  And continue to focus on the personalized service that they can get from leveraging local or small businesses."

Michell says small businesses should also try to be involved in their community, adding their survey showed that customers supported local businesses that were visible and active participants in their town.
