RCMP say it is one of the easiest crimes to prevent from happening.

However, thefts from vehicles are a common report that Mounties deal with throughout the year.

Corporal Roy Kennedy says in almost all cases, these crimes occur because the victim simply forgets to lock their vehicle.

"We don't get a lot of reports about them breaking windows or vandalizing vehicles to actually get into them.  These are individuals that are merely checking handles and trying to take the easy route to get to your property."

Besides locking your doors when you get out, Kennedy adds you can also make sure you don't fall victim to this crime by remembering to take any valuable items with you when you get out of your vehicle.
